Spring is Here: Let's shake the wiggles out!

Greetings!

Thank you for your time as you join me in this Inspired Reminders bulletin from LivingAfterWLS. I just love this image of a wild zebra rolling with abandon stirring up dust. Without scruples the zebra rolls and kicks and shakes for one reason: it feels good. Truthfully, I'm just a little bit jealous of that free-spirited feeling evoked by a simple act from one of nature's most beautiful creatures.

To satisfy my jealousy in today's newsletter we take a look at ways we can add the joy of motion to our day and drink up the joy with pure abandon. After surgery when we talk about exercise there is often perception and expectation that exercise means a full-out effort in a structured manner or it doesn't count. But the truth is, little bouts of motion and energy bursts have tremendous positive effect on our health, our weight loss, and our mental well being. Featured today is a look at Wiggle Therapy one of my favorites!), a review of beneficial stretching, and an easy walking guide. You will also find a terrific weeknight recipe for Tuna Pasta Primavera and a link-summary of popular posts from the LivingAfterWLS Blog.

Thank you for your time and I wish you good feelings when you take time to shake the wiggles out!

Emotional Eating Solved

LivingAfterWLS Weekly Digest: Emotional Eating Solved
Check out the newest edition of our LivingAfterWLS Weekly Digest in our Archive:

"Thank you for joining me in this week's LivingAfterWLS Digest, I know your time is valuable and appreciate you spending some of it with me. Today  we discuss the reality of emotional eating - have you declared yourself an emotional eater? Being an emotional eater is not a character flaw, it is part of the human code that has evolved over many generations. From the beginning of mankind our species has sought food in response to physical and emotional needs. This is universal to every culture on the planet. The emotional need for food is so embedded in our behavior it is unlikely we can ever change it and trying to modify this inherent behavior leads to frustration and feelings of failure. Rather than change the behavior why not acknowledge it and manage it in a healthy and rational way? Today's featured article addresses just that topic: Emotional eating got you down?

We also take a look at Rule #2 - Lots of Water as a reminder how important daily water intake is to our weight loss efforts and our overall wellness.  And don't miss our Quick Tips and a delicious make ahead meal of chicken and potato skins

I hope you find this digest useful in your ongoing efforts for improved health with weight loss surgery. You have the power and knowledge to make this your healthiest season ever! Let's do it together!"

Weekly Digest: The ABC's of WLS

Don't you just love Back to School time, a mid-year start-over so to speak? This is my favorite time of year and as luck would have it, my ultimate start-over -- gastric bypass -- was on September 13, 1999. Talk about going Back to School in a big way! Last Saturday marked 15 years since my surgery. Where did the time go? While visiting with my husband about this milestone I said to him, "After 15 years you would think I'd have this down to a science. But I still have to work at using my tool and weight management every day, it is so hard!"

Because he is a wise person he replied, "It's hard work because it IS hard."
So today, in the spirit of Back to School I present our newly published Infographic: The ABC's of WLS. You can view it in full down below or click on the image to open a PDF file for download and printing. I hope you find the alphabetic snippets inspiring and useful.

Download the PDF File here: ABC's of WLS

One thing I have learned with absolute certainty is weight management can only be achieved when we have a plan. Leaving our menu to chance didn't work before surgery and it doesn't work after surgery. The plan need not be elaborate. Some days I scribble on my planner: B-eggs; L-tuna; D-chicken. There's my protein. I'll manage the details when I get there. On better organized weeks I plan the weekly menu and post on the refrigerator. This produces stellar results. Regardless of the level of detail, a plan is essential. Read more in this article: I Love DIET. And if you are looking at a truly fun way to get motivated to move check out Wiggle Therapy.
Welcome Back to WLS School of Living!  I hope you find this digest useful in your ongoing efforts for improved health with weight loss surgery. You have the power to make this your healthiest Back to School ever! Let's do it together!

Baby it's hot outside! Heat issues for WLS sun lovers

Understanding the dangers of summer heat
From our Newsletter Archives: The Heat is On: Don't Let it Spoil Summer Fun

Greetings!

It's hot out there! Across the nation, as we are celebrating Summer, many are suffering from record-breaking hot temperatures. Add to that power outages that have shut-down air conditioning and refrigeration and this is one sweaty country. Aside from being uncomfortable and inconvenient, high temperatures pose serious health threats including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

Those of us with weight loss surgery may be at increased risk of heat related illness if we struggle with the all-important Rule #2 of the Four Rules: Drink Lots of Water. As bariatric patients we are instructed to sip-sip-sip water during waking hours to keep our body hydrated and facilitate weight loss. In situations of extreme heat even a slight case of dehydration can become serious and may include symptoms very similar to dumping syndrome such as dizziness and disorientation.

Please take a moment to review the articles in this week's Digest and take appropriate action to protect your body from heat related illness with proper hydration and other temperature-lowering actions. And be mindful of those around you for symptoms that suggest a heat related illness, sometimes we do not recognize the symptoms in ourselves. Let's take care and avoid being one of the statistics during this season of celebrating our new healthy life. You deserve to take extra-steps to be healthy and enjoy your new life of LivingAfterWLS! Make sure to review our Four Rules and don't miss this week's featured recipe: Smoked Turkey & Melon Salad.

Best Wishes and Good Health!

LivingAfterWLS Weekly Digest: Doctor-Patient Communication

Is your doctor preventing your WLS success?
Compassion & Communicaton Essential to your health management with WLS

Our LivingAfterWLS Weekly Digest has been delivered to your Inbox and is available online in our Archive: Digest November 22, 2013.   This week we discuss the importance and reality of doctor-patient communication regarding weight management. Check it out!

Salutations!
I hope this message finds you well and excited about pursuing a healthier way of life with weight loss surgery. Thank you for taking time to join me here: I know your Inbox is as full as mine with many things asking for your time and attention.

This Weekly Bulletin presents some interesting new research: There is a disconnect between physicians and patients when it comes to discussing obesity and weight management. Not surprised, are you? I think any of us sitting on the exam table feeling vulnerable in that tie-in-the-back dressing gown would prefer not to discuss our weight problem with the doctor. But research also shows that an honest non-judgmental dialog between doctor and patient goes a long way in our desire to take action to fight obesity. In fact, effective doctor-patient communication is central to building a therapeutic doctor-patient relationship, which is the heart and art of medicine. Our featured article, "Understanding and Resolving the Patient-Physician Disconnect" expounds on this belief.

In the left sidebar you will find brief quotes and inspiration from many experts on improving our health-care relationships. And don't miss our closing article, "Just show me you care" - Isn't that all we really want in our relationship with the doctor?

Next week is Thanksgiving here in the United States. Between the feasting, the gatherings, the shopping, and the parades and football I hope to find time to reflect on the many blessings I've enjoyed this year. And I count my LivingAfterWLS friends and neighbors at the top of the list. Thank you for all you have given me. May you enjoy a blessed holiday rejoice with gratitude in your heart.  Please watch your Inbox the next few days for our special Cooking with Kaye Thanksgiving Recipes and a special edition 5 Day Pouch Test Bulletin which will empower you to thrive this holiday season without guilt or weight gain! Yea!

In preparation for Thanksgiving last week was National Clean Your Refrigerator Day (An occasion started by Maytag so the legend goes.) Learn more about the "holiday" and get some great tips on refrigerator cleanliness and upkeep in the LivingAfterWLS Blog: Is your refrigerator giving you the stink eye?
