The Bariceutical Prescription

Nutritionally deprived, wrinkled, drained and tired is not what Silvia Demeter envisioned when she underwent gastric banding surgery in 2003. But that is how she found herself feeling after losing weight.

"I felt like I was starving. My skin was wrinkled, my hair was falling out. I felt drained and tired. Even grocery shopping or caring for my family was a chore. By 5PM each day I was a couch potato," said Silvia. Even as an obese person Silvia was mindful of nutrition turning to organic solutions to meet her nutrional needs. " After surgery I was taking the hard-tablet vitamins prescribed by my surgical weight loss center. But with a gastric band hard vitamins get stuck and I suffered from acid reflux."

But worse than the acid reflux was the inability of Silvia's body to absorb the greatly needed nutrients in the vitamins. Studies indicate that it takes a normal digestive system as long as four hours to absorb as little as 20% of the nutrients in a vitamin. The inactive ingredients in vitamins such as binders, fillers, artificial colors, flavors, wax coatings and preservatives slow down absorption.

No wonder Silvia and so many weight loss surgery patients are nutritionally deficient.

In her very personal struggle to become nutritionally healthy Silvia visited health food stores and started mixing her own cocktail of liquid vitamins. But it wasn't enough. "I started attending conventions and consulting with an absorption specialist, along with many bariatric professionals because there had to be a better way to meet my nutritional needs," said Silvia.

Silvia became her own scientist and surrounded herself with the best experts in the fields of nutrition, absorption and bariatrics. The result: The BariCeutical Prescription, the only patent-pending bariatric supplements specifically designed for the bariatric patients and endorsed by top physicians in the United States.

BariCeutical liquid vitamins immediately release nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract within thirty seconds of consumption and the overall absorption is 98%. Silvia says, "With each vitamin supplement that we make our goal is to provide you with meaningful vitamins that provide you maximum benefit. Through research, quality control and quality ingredients that's the BariCeutical Prescription difference. It's our life's work."

Silvia Demeter is the real deal: she is one of us. Her passion for living well after gastric weight loss surgery is unsurpassed. "I founded this company for me because I wanted to feel like my old self, full of energy and ambition. Now it is my pleasure to share these products with the world of weight loss surgery so that everyone can be nourished and feel the energy of a healthy weight well-fed body."

Boost Potassium Intake with Salmon and Grapefruit

Potassium is one of the nutrients gastric bypass patients tend to be deficient. In fact many weight loss surgery patients (WLS) supplement their diet with potassium. By including certain foods in the diet weight loss surgery patients can increase their potassium intake.

Read more: Potassium Rich Food

Of course we have heard all our lives to eat a banana when low on potassium. But did you know there are many foods rich in potassium, which are better tolerated than the banana by most weight loss surgery patients? Foods such as apricots, butternut squash, grapefruit, salmon, halibut and chicken are all potassium powerhouses. By incorporating these foods in our meals after gastric bypass we benefit from flavor, variety and healthful nutrients and perhaps stave-off some of the food boredom we all complain about. In addition, we know WLS patients are at risk of potassium deficiency so why not get some the old fashioned way – delicious home cooked food.

One of my favorite potassium rich recipes includes salmon and grapefruit, ingredients that are available year round and easily digested by the weight loss surgery patient.

Grapefruit-Broiled Salmon

Prep: 20 minutes/ Cook: 10 minutes

This WLS friendly recipe tastes great and is nutrient dense with vitamin C, potassium and dietary fiber from the grapefruit and heat-friendly Omega 3 fatty acids in the salmon. A normal serving of Grapefruit-Broiled Salmon contains about 40% daily value potassium. The salad is good served cold the next day.

Ingredients:

3 grapefruits (or one jar canned grapefruit)
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 celery stalk cut into ¼-inch dice
¼ cup finely chopped red onion
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
½ teaspoon salt

4 boneless salmon fillets, with skin (6 ounces each)
½ teaspoon dried oregano
¼ teaspoon black pepper

Directions:

1. With a small paring knife, peel the grapefruits. Working over a bowl to catch the juice separate the grapefruit sections from the membranes; reserve any juice that collects in the bowl. Halve the grapefruit sections crosswise and transfer to a salad bowl. Add the bell pepper, celery, oinon, oil, mustard, and ½ teaspoon of the salt. Toss to combine and refrigerate until serving.
(to save time I have used the bottled pre-sectioned grapefruit from the produce section.)

2. Preheat the broiler. Place the salmon, skin-side down, on a broiler rack. Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of the reserved grapefruit juice, the oregano, black pepper and remaining ¼ teaspoon salt over the salmon. Broil 6 inches from the heat for 8 minutes or until just cooked through. Serve the salmon with the grapefruit salad. Serves 4 (normal)

Hair Loss Cause - Blood Circulation

Hair loss is a concern for most new weight loss surgery patients. We have heard the stories about patients losing their hair during the first year of massive weight loss. Many of us take vitamins believed to improve the health of the hair and prevent hair loss including silica complex and biotin. But here is another approach to avoiding hair loss: improved blood circulation. Mr. Silva writes, "Blood circulation is one hair loss cause that you can work on. By doing some of the recommend techniques listed here you can help yourself to have better hair for a longer time."

By Rudy Silva

One hair loss cause that is not discussed much is poor blood circulation in your scalp. This must be included in any discussion or listing of what causes hair loss or what can improve hair growth. What is important in blood circulation is the quantity and quality of the blood reaching the hair root. If your hair root does not get a good supply of blood, lymph, oxygen and nutrients, it will shrink and die.

Reduction in blood to the scalp is one hair loss cause that is caused by yet another body condition - tension or stress. Excess stress causes muscles to tighten and reduces blood flow to the furthest parts of our body - feet, hands, and head. Capillaries become constricted and feed your hair follicles and hair roots less blood.

Stress also works with androgenic hormones to tighten the scalp, making it thinner, and making it more susceptible to hair loss. Women, however, seem to maintain a thicker scalp which is a better condition for continuous hair growth.

Your blood circulation can also be caused by harden crystals that form from sebum and hair perspiration. These crystals plug up the follicles causing surround tissue to harden and then restrict the flow of blood to the follicle. Use of apple cider vinegar as a final rinse during shampooing and using jojoba oil as a hair gel will help limit these crystals.

Any arthritis or tightening of neck muscles can restrict blood flow to the head. Here you need neck massages. Regular exercises or movement activity will help you increase your blood circulation to your head.

In the hair loss cause due to blood circulation, moving your head below your heart regularly can bring more blood into your scalp. For those of you that have high blood pressure or circulation problems, you need to avoid these techniques. You can lie in bed with your head hanging over. Bring you head near the floor and count to 10 then bring it back level with your body. You can repeat this 6 - 7 times once or twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Also you can increase the count from10 to longer times as you continue to do this exercise.

The are also slant board that are sold, which allow you to lie on the board so that your head is near the floor and your feet are up in the air and the height will be determined by the angle of the slant. You can also do a yoga head stance, if you are doing yoga.

If you want scalp massage to be effective you need to do it at least twice a day. Place your fingertips on your scalp and move the scalp in two directions - forward and back and in a circulating motion. Do not rub or scratch your scalp to avoid breaking off hair or damaging your scalp.

Blood circulation is one hair loss cause that you can work on. By doing some of the recommend techniques listed here you can help yourself to have better hair for a longer time.
