Octoboer 5 Day Pouch Test Bulletin - Lots of Water

The October 5 Day Pouch Test Bulletin is available for your reading and reference purposes. Check it out here in our Archive: October 2012: 5 Day Pouch Test Bulletin
Below is the introductory article.

Greetings Neighbors!
In the September 5 Day Pouch Test Bulletin we discussed Protein First, the first of our four WLS rules. As reported, many of us are not getting enough protein. I was pleased to hear from so many of you who were inspired to increase your protein intake and you noticed the results on the bathroom scale. Congratulations to all of you! Even if we do not need to do the 5 Day Pouch Test, we almost always can do a little something different that improves the results we are a getting with our healthy weight management. If you missed last month's bulletin you can check it out here: September 2012 5DPT Bulletin.
Coffee Protein Smoothie
Does coffee count?

This month we move to Rule #2 - Drink Lots of Water.  The advice to drink lots of water is universal across the diet spectrum. Water flushes toxins, including the body fat we shed, improves circulation, promotes skin health, brain function, kidney function -- the list is long. With all the great benefits that come from drinking lots of water you'd think it would be easy to get it done. But drinking lots of water every day can be very challenging.  The more we drink, the more we eliminate (not always convenient). Water is tasteless and can seem tedious. There are many other better flavored beverages tempting us. And then there are the liquid restrictions: no water with meals; no water for 15 to 30 minutes before and after meals. And what actually counts as water?

It is really confusing!

It seems like almost everyone has their own standard for what counts as water and what doesn't.  Even from one bariatric center to the next it is difficult to get a consistent answer about how much water we need and what counts as water. Over the years I've come to my own conclusion about what "counts" as water for me. First, water counts. Next, if there are nutrients in the beverage such as Green Tea or a protein drink, I count it toward my fluid intake. One glass of red wine with its health promoting antioxidants counts -- four glasses of red wine do not count. Coffee with protein powder blended in counts; black coffee doesn't (because of the caffeine).  I aim for 60 to 80 ounces of water or countable fluid a day. This puts me in the bathroom about every 2 hours and I am able to maintain my weight without frustrating water weight gain or false weight loss.

I imagine that is the real bottom line regarding water intake is answered with this question:  What does it take to help us feel our very best? It will be different for each one of us but it certainly helps to learn what is working for others traveling this not-so-easy WLS terrain. I hope you will find some nuggets of helpful information in this month's 5DPT Bulletin. Thanks for joining me!

Addiction, Transfer-Addiction, You & WLS

LivingAfterWLS Weekly Digest: 09/19/2012
Hello and Welcome!

Today I address the topic of addiction and transfer addiction after weight loss surgery. I have been asked many times to offer an opinion on this topic and have avoided it because I am not trained in the field of addiction medicine. True addiction is serious and may be life threatening - it is not simply a word we can toss about glibly as an excuse like "I'm addicted to chocolate".  We are doing the weight loss surgery community an injustice when we presume to diagnose addiction without taking the proper clinical steps for assessment, screening, and then treatment. Addiction is serious business.  I hope the information in this Digest is useful to you as you consider this topic in relation to our collective weight loss surgery experience.

Remembering & Honoring

We join you in remembering and honoring those whose lives were taken.
Dear LivingAfterWLS Neighbor,

Let us come together to grieve, to remember, to honor, and to express our gratitude to those who demonstrated what it is to be a hero, and to pledge ourselves to live in honor of their bravery.

WLS - What is the real goal?

From the LivingAfterWLS Weekly Digest August 6, 2012

The Real Goal:
Improve your health;
Celebrate Your Journey
Petals of Light by Kaye Bailey

Remember, obesity is a chronic disease, like diabetes or hypertension. In a sense, patients are struggling against their own body's coordinated effort to stop them from losing weight.

Acknowledge the challenging nature of weight control by adopting problem-solving responses to goals that are not fully met. Remember, the examination of circumstances leading to unmet goals can lead to new and more effective strategies.

Improvement of one's health is the goal of obesity treatment.

Use simple charts or graphs to summarize changes in weight and  the associated risk factors that were present at the time treatment for obesity was sought. Looking at the big picture -- beyond body weight -- is motivational in one's ongoing quest to improve health.

Get back to Protein First with 5 Day Pouch Test

Are you struggling to manage your weight or lose weight with weight loss surgery? Maybe you are not eating enough protein. Check out the September 5 Day Pouch Test Bulletin for little hints that make a big difference in your success.  Here is one of them:

Measure Portions:
We worry so much about the reading on the bathroom scale and so little about the reading on the kitchen scale.

The only way to know exactly what we are serving our self is to measure and weigh portions.

Eyeballing hasn't worked for us in the past. Leaving it to pouch control doesn't necessarily work. Weigh protein, 3 to 4 ounces per meal. Measure soup, 1/2 to 1 cup per meal. Count bites: 2B/1B Rhythm - 2 Bites Protein to 1 Bite Carbohydrate. Monitor water, at least 64 ounces a day. Measure food and water intake as vigilantly as we measure body weight on the bathroom scale - one becomes the other.
We are so ready to celebrate or agonize over a few ounces changed on the bathroom scale, yet so indifferent to measuring our meals on the kitchen scale. Can't we see the two are intrinsically related and one affects the other?

Is your health at risk because of Rule #1?

From the September 5 Day Pouch Test Bulletin

Greetings Neighbors!
How much protein have you had so far today?

"As a group, we are not eating enough protein and this shortfall is putting our health at risk."

Protein & Fruit WLS Perfect Meal We know that after weight loss surgery we should follow a high protein diet. We call this "Protein First" - the first of the Four Rules of WLS. Mainstream studies of people managing their weight without bariatric surgery continue to indicate a diet high in protein supports weight loss and weight management in addition to promoting health.

WebMD recently reported, "Diets higher in protein and moderate in carbs, along with a lifestyle of regular exercise are often purported by experts to reduce blood fats and maintain lean tissue while burning fat for fuel without constant hunger sidetracking dieters." Researchers don't understand exactly how protein works to turn down appetite. They surmise that it may be because a high-protein diet causes the brain to receive lower levels of appetite-stimulating hormones. It may be due to eating fewer carbs and/or the specific protein effect on hunger hormones and brain chemistry.

How Much Protein Do You Need?

The experts are now suggesting dieters eat 120 grams of protein a day to get the potential weight loss benefit. They advise advancing protein intake gradually, "If you want to increase your protein intake, do it slowly over the course of a week.  To be on the safe side, check with your doctor before adding large amounts of protein to your diet."

120 grams = 20 ounces or 1.25 pounds protein/day

Bariatric centers are less precise in their protein recommendations. In fact, a 2008 study reveals nutritionists recommend anywhere from 60 to 105 grams of protein a day for patients following a 1,200-calorie diet. The recommendations vary so much that there is confusion in the WLS population about how much protein we need. What we do know is that as a group, we are not eating enough protein and this shortfall is putting our health at risk.
In 2011 a leading researcher and bariatric specialist reported, "We found that there have been few studies on protein intake recommendations for bariatric patients. Dietary protein ingestion among this population tends to be inadequate, potentially leading to a loss of lean body mass, reduced metabolic rates, and physiological damage. Conversely, a protein-rich diet can lead to increased satiety, enhanced weight loss, and improved body composition. The quality and composition of protein sources are also very important."

We need to turn this trend around. Today's 5 Day Pouch Test Bulletin takes a look at how we can use our 5DPT experience as a catalyst to following and enjoying a high protein diet and the health benefits and weight loss that accompany it.  As we turn the page on summer stepping into autumn let's use the enthusiasm of "back to learning" to make a new commitment to the goals and health objectives that we valued so much when we underwent surgery in the first place.

Are you chasing the wrong WLS-Goal Weight?

LivingAfterWLS Weekly Digest - August 27, 2012
Are you Chasing the wrong WLS-Goal Weight
Link to Newsletter

Opening article: This is one of the most important topics we have ever addressed in the LivingAfterWLS Weekly Digest: Goal Weight. As we again focus on our health and weight loss goals as summer comes to a close I invite you to consider the emphasis we place on goal weight. Today I'm addressing goal weight as it relates to our experience with weight loss surgery. Prior to surgery patients are in cahoots with their surgeons as they plan for bariatric surgery, set the course and denote the finish line which will be crossed when goal weight is achieved. I don't particularly like to hear what I'm about to say and I know it is a tough thing for my WLS Neighbors to hear, but I'm putting it out there bluntly so we can face it and take action:

Few patients will ever reach goal weight.

There you have it. Numerous studies suggest that fewer than 20% of patients achieve goal weight. My work with patients of all gastric surgeries for weight management suggests the same thing. In fact, it is fairly common for me to meet someone who introduces themselves saying, "I'm one of those people who never made it to goal weight." Here is what you need to know about goal weight so it will cease to be a barrier to your pursuit of overall health.

Know This Truth:
It is the random method of determining goal weight that is flawed; it is not the patient who is flawed.

Goal weight is a random data point set arbitrarily with reference to standardized tables that are irrelevant to an individual's health history, age, co-morbidities and genetic profile. In most cases the goal weight creates unrealistic expectations for the patient. When patients do not achieve this random point of measure called goal weight they consider themselves a failure and "one of those people." Patients become hopeless and frustrated. These feelings almost always lead to rebound weight gain.

Why do we use weight as a measure of health?
From the time of our birth when proud parents happily announce our weight and height and throughout our life these two data points (weight and height) are used to assess our health. The reason? Cost and convenience. Collecting these two measurements is easy and cheap. Most medical professionals agree that the current standards for body weight measured by weight in relation to height (called BMI-Body Mass Index) does little to reflect disease risk, identify body fat, and in general presents a misleading argument for overall health. In reality, the most these data points reveal is change over time without indicating a decline or improvement in health. Yet we are encouraged with weight loss surgery, and by conventional diet programs as well, to focus on a goal weight and BMI that may have very little to do with the health of our body.

Today we go beyond goal weight to help you achieve better results that are health focused.

Please join me with an open mind as we look at goal weight as it is used by weight loss surgery patients. Bear in mind that I'm not anti-goal weight. I am simply sharing the knowledge I have collected in building my understanding of how such a tight focus on goal weight results in difficulty and disappointment for many patients. As you read with an open mind add this knowledge to your personal experience and understanding. You are a powerful person. Harness your strength and intelligence as you engage in the pursuit of  better health and better living with weight loss surgery.

This is a longer newsletter than our normal weekly digest. I know we are all limited on time and asking you to read this may be a burden. But the content here is very important to your life-long healthy weight management. I hope you find it worth your while. Please share it with your support groups as a means of encouragement and empowerment - We are all so much more than the bottom line measured by the bathroom scale.

Remember, We are all in this together!

Back to School Refresher Course

Greetings Neighbors!
Where has the summer gone? Already the kids are headed back to school and the carefree days of summer will soon be replaced with routine schedules and a focus on learning. When
I was in school I always enjoyed the first week of school where lessons focused on reviewing what we learned during the last school year; things we may have forgotten over the summer. I loved that feeling of "EUREKA" when knowledge came back and it felt so basic, so fundamental I couldn't believe I had forgotten it in the first place.

Now I'm a few decades past the good old back to school days. But that EUREKA! feeling returns when I take a new look at the rules of healthy weight management with surgery. Just today I re-learned that starting my day with protein feels really good. I wonder, "How in the world did I forget that fundamental?" So I am capturing the spirit of back to school in this special edition 5 Day Pouch Test Bulletin and reviewing the EUREKA! fundamentals that keeps this WLS working for me. I hope you'll join me in this review and take some time to go back to school - the University of LivingAfterWLS - right this way - I saved you a seat!

Cooking with Kaye: Fish Tacos

Link to Newsletter
Classic Fish Tacos
Inspired by street cart favorites:
Made healthy for WLS Living

August 15, 2012

Greetings!

Fish tacos can be purchased from vending carts in busy marketplaces. When fresh fish is seasoned and grilled it is a good source of protein that most weight loss surgery patients find easy to tolerate. However, when the fish is battered and fried, as often found on vending carts, it becomes unappealing, fattening and consumption may cause dumping syndrome due to the grease. (Refresher article: Foods that cause Dumping). It is easy to avoid unpleasant pitfalls and prepare delicious and affordable fish tacos at home.

This Cooking with Kaye features a light fish with Mexican seasoning and lime served in a romaine lettuce leaf with a sour cream sauce. Serve it with Seasoned Summer Squash with Cheese but save room for dessert: warm Spiced Peaches with Sweet Sour Cream. And try our surplus zucchini recipes to make the most of summer's bounty.

Have a great meal Neighbors. And remember, there is always something good cooking in the Neighborhood!

Thanks for cooking with me!

Weekly Digest: Food Pushers & Food Police

LivingAfterWLS Weekly Digest: August 13, 2012

I hope you are enjoying a healthy happy Summer! Like everyone this time of year, our lazy-days of summer seem to be filled with more activities and gatherings than we can manage. Without fail, every event we have enjoyed has involved a meal as the central attraction. Also without fail, the "Food Pushers" and "Food Police" have been on patrol. Have you seen them at your summer gatherings?

The "Food Pushers" are those who would have us eat more than we could or should eat. Sometimes they are well intentioned wishing only to share the bounty of the table; others are prideful cooks who consider food rejection a personal insult. And admittedly, some food pushers have unsavory designs for derailing our best weight management efforts.

The "Food Police" are those who monitor our plates and forks and pass judgment on us for what we do or do not eat. They too can be well intentioned such as a fellow health-watcher who may question the trans-fat or sugar content of a dish; she is looking out for the good of all. Other police are citation-hungry plate monitors hoping to catch us in the act of breaking rules and crossing dietary boundaries.

It has been a dozen years since my WLS and I have been a very public WLS-Advocate for the last 8 years. I know that for myself, and for many of you, there is not a time when we are not closely watched and critiqued as we engage in fueling our bodies with food. It's no wonder so many of us, myself included, seek to eat in privacy much of the time! Here are a few skills I've learned to use in coping with the food pushers and food police. I you find them helpful as you form your own strategies in dealing with the Food Pushers and Food Police.
Best Wishes & Good Health!

Press Release: Must Have WLS Book

For Immediate Release:
On July 2, 2012 LivingAfterWLS published Kaye Bailey's all-new 180 page 5 Day Pouch Test Owner's Manual 2nd Edition - and the reviews are in: This is THE Must-Have book for every weight loss surgery library.

Surgeons and patients agree, "The information and advice is clearly presented and inspiring with an eye for detail and a voice of encouragement," said Cathy Burns, a weight loss surgery consultant from Philadelphia, PA and 14 year gastric-bypass post-op patient. "I read everything I can that comes out about weight loss surgery. Kaye knows her stuff as well as anyone in the field, but she tells it like a best friend who is sharing an experience.  I cannot imagine the struggles I'd face if I didn't have her books to flip through when I'm feeling frustrated or simply tired of trying. She really understands that this (WLS) is for life and she makes me want to keep trying. Thanks Kaye!"

The original 5 Day Pouch Test Owner's Manual was published in 2008 at 102 pages. When it was retired June 30, 2012 it was in the fourth printing and had been shipped to every US State and many countries around the world. The 5 Day Pouch Test plan has proven to be a highly effective back-to-basics approach to capturing regain following weight loss surgery. It is nutritionally sound and founded on the rules of weight loss surgery and the basic tenets prescribed by accredited bariatric surgeons.  In early 2012 Kaye found the time was right to update the Owner's Manual to include new guidelines from the FDA, the bariatric community, the US Surgeon General, and the freelance bariatric research community (research not affiliated or supported by pharmaceutical companies, doctors, or hospitals).  The result is an all-new 180 page Owner's Manual.

Link: 2nd Edition Table of Contents

"Since the original manual was published the basics of the plan have not changed," said Kaye. "In fact, we have a greater body of knowledge and evidence that the 5 Day Pouch Test is highly effective when used correctly to get back on track with WLS. In the new Manual the format is different and the book is beautifully produced. It is seasoned with sidebars throughout for quick glimpses at important facts and reminders. There are 16 new recipes and an all-new 5DPT journal format. I think people who have read the first manual will find that even though the 5DPT plan is familiar the facts, enthusiasm and inspiration are fresh. People who have both the first and second editions of the 5DPT Owner's Manual will feel they have two very useful, very different books at their disposal for lasting WLS support. It is intrinsically important to me that we provide top-notch information to our readers in a manner that inspires and motivates. I think we have done just that with this 2nd Edition."

A Candid Interview with Kaye Bailey

5 Day Pouch Test Owner's Manual - 2nd Edition

All New Book: Same great back-to-basics

by Jennifer Ellis, Administrative Assistant

On July 3 LivingAfterWLS published the all-new 5 Day Pouch Test Owner's Manual 2nd Edition  by Kaye Bailey and retired the highly successful first edition which was originally published in 2008 and in the fourth printing. At right, Kaye receives cartons holding the all new 5DPT books. With the publication of the 2nd Edition Kaye has answered many questions from media and consumers about the new book. I have collected her responses and share some of the most asked questions and answers here.

Did the basic 5DPT plan change when you wrote the new book?
No. After five years the 5DPT is more solid than ever. Thousands of people around the world have enjoyed terrific success with the plan. When they had lost all hope they found new confidence in their pouch and in their personal power during and after the 5DPT. The plan, at its most basic level, continues to be 2 days liquid diet for pampering the pouch; 1 day soft protein; 1 day firm protein and 1 day solid protein. All the while observing liquid restrictions, avoiding slider foods, and focus on the Four Rules.

I noticed the subtitle has changed: What is the thinking behind that?5DPT Manual 2nd Edition
Yes! I did change the subtitle for the second edition. The new subtitle is "Find your weight loss surgery tool in five focused days." In the earlier edition the subtitle read, "Fix your weight loss surgery tool. Take control in 5 easy days." I found that more emphasis was needed on the focus and hard work required during the five days. The plan is not simply a matter of following a food plan and bam! you're done. It is a matter of following the deliberate food plan and practicing the WLS habits and rules that are proven to help us lose weight and keep it off. It really isn't 5 easy days; it is five focused days. Those 5 days, when done mindfully, truly pay off with many successful days beyond the 5DPT.  So many of us, when we minimize the effort into 5 easy days, we go right back to doing what got us in trouble in the first place.  So now it is five focused days. Has a nice ring to it, don't you think?

"Simply not wanting to be overweight is a wish, not a plan. One way to motivate yourself is to recognize how gratifying it is to make a commitment to a goal, identify the specific steps to get there, follow your plan, and reap the rewards." (Judith J. Wurtman & Nina Frusztajer Marquis, 2006)
~Page 29 - 5DPT Owner's Manual 2nd Edition
If the plan hasn't changed, what is new in the book, I see it is 180 pages and the original book was only 100 pages.
Well, as you can imagine with a book that has been in print since 2008, we have received a lot of feedback from our readers and we listened. I am so proud of our LivingAfterWLS readers because consistently they have asked for more information, more knowledge, more inspiration. They seem to have an endless curiosity for self-improvement and health management. The original book was written to be a quick read with loads of inspiration and it served this purpose well. For the second edition I reorganized the presentation of information. For example, Chapter 3 is a quick overview of the complete 5DPT with a brief review of the WLS Four Rules and the tenets of successful weight management.  Then in Chapters 4, 5, and 6 each day is covered in detail. Chapters for each day include the dietary plan for the day, helpful and motivational sub-chapters, a summary of key learning points, the daily journal, eating out tips, and FAQ's relating to that day of the plan. Chapter 9 is a comprehensive chapter about health basics and dietary management with weight loss surgery, this is new from the first edition. And there are 16 new tested and proven recipes that work effectively with the 5DPT and beyond. The new book also includes new information from the FDA, the US Surgeon General, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS), and the free-lance bariatric community. This is a rapidly changing field and it is important for all of us to stay current with the science and medical practice as it evolves.

Simply put - the second edition is loaded with detail and inspiration that I think readers will find it useful in their effort to manage obesity with surgical intervention of any kind.

You developed the 5DPT in 2007: what is the most important thing you have learned since developing it?
Oh my goodness, there has been so much! I am so fortunate to learn from real people on the front lines of WLS. It is always comforting to learn that other people also have to work at this weight loss and weight maintenance like I do - even with this "easy-breezy" surgery! I mean, here I am more than 12 years post-op and I'm still trying to figure out the best way to manage my weight and secretly hoping to stumble on some easy trick keep my weight under control. I am so often amazed and awed at the resilience of others, the strength people have to rise again and again in the face of great challenge. There is truly so much goodness in the world and in the heart of mankind and I count my blessings many times a day that I work in this WLS community that brings me in contact with good and well-meaning people. It makes some of the darkness in the world fade to gray. I guess building on that I would say that we should never-ever Never-EVER stop trying. And we need to take care of one another: when we have strength to spare let's give back and when we need a hand it will be there. Ha! I feel like there should be orchestra music playing as I say this. But darn it! I do feel this in my heart. Next question?

Where can the 2nd Edition 5DPT Owner's Manual be purchased?
Like all of our LivingAfterWLS publications, the 2nd Edition 5DPT Owner's Manual is available exclusively online in the LivingAfterWLS General Store. Link to Store

I already have the original edition. Is it worth it to get the new 2nd edition?
Tricky question to ask the author! I actually really worried about this because we have so many faithful LivingAfterWLS Neighbors who buy and read our publications. It is intrinsically important to me that we provide top-notch information to our readers in a manner that inspires and motivates. As I said earlier, the basics of the plan have not changed. The format of this book is different, and beautifully produced - I love the sidebars. It contains the most up-to-date information from the FDA, the bariatric community, and the freelance bariatric research community (research not tied to or supported by pharmaceutical companies, doctors, or hospitals). I think even though the actual 5DPT is familiar, the enthusiasm and inspiration will feel fresh. I believe that people who read both the first and second editions of the 5DPT Owner's Manual will feel they have two very useful, very different books at their disposal for lasting WLS support. I hope to hear from some of you who have both - what do you think?

Healing Through Humor - Laugh Yourself Healthy!

Laugh your way to better health

Shared from WebMD

You’re lying in bed with some kind of health problem, taking medicine and maybe getting some kind of treatment or therapy. Or maybe you’re taking care of someone who’s ill, and it’s wearing you out. Sometimes life can feel pretty overwhelming. This might seem like a crazy idea, but now’s the time for you to laugh.

Think for a minute... Is there anything close by that might cheer you up? A TV show? A book? Your child dancing?

Whatever you’re doing right now, stop and find something that makes you laugh. Sure, laughter can help you forget about your troubles, but it also can help your body heal. That’s right. Laughter can help your body heal.
Your brain talks to your body

You probably already know that your brain is in charge of things like what you think about and your ability to walk, talk, breathe, and move. But did you know that your brain also produces chemicals that affect everything from how fast your heart beats to how well you fight off disease?

Thanks to something called the mind-body connection, the simple act of laughing can tell your brain to produce chemicals that:

Lower your risk for heart attacks.
    Increase your blood circulation.
Help your heart work better and pump more evenly.
Boost your body’s immune system to help you fight off infection.
Increase your deep breathing, which relaxes your muscles, gives you more energy, and lowers your stress.

Laughter is one of those things, like getting exercise or watching what you eat, that you can do yourself. Here are a few ways to laugh more:

Ask your spouse, partner, or friends to help by telling you good jokes or bringing you funny movies.
Spend time with the world’s leading experts on laughter: children.
Surround yourself with people and things that make you laugh-whatever they may be.
Surround yourself with humor: An Internet search for "stupid pet tricks" or "funniest home movies" will give you, as well as the people you care for or the people who care for you, plenty to laugh at.
Ask at your local library or bookstore for funny books, audio programs, or movies.

It's easy to think that the only things that can help your health are things that others do for or to you-the medicines you take, the doctors you visit, the surgeries or operations you have. And these are all important. But laughter is effective treatment you can do for yourself. And you don't need a medical license to do it.

Ripe Tomatoes Served with Pasta & Goat Cheese

Please enjoy this recipe from the LivingAfterWLS Newsletter Archives:

I think we are all familiar with classic macaroni, pasta or potato salads that are heavy on starch and light on vegetables or complex carbohydrates. While no doubt these are enjoyable to eat they leave us feeling heavy, sleepy, and bloated. In many cases they lead to discomfort and possibly dumping in gastric surgery patients. I have learned that in changing the ratio of starch and complex carbohydrates we can enjoy the mouth-feel of pasta or potatoes without the heaviness of a traditional classic side-dish salad. This recipe for Pasta with Tomatoes & Goat Cheese is adapted from a long-since-lost issue of Gourmet magazine. I enjoy mixing it up with whatever fresh produce and cheese is available and I think you will too. Use this recipe as your template and mix-it-up to suit your palate. Just remember to keep the ratio at 2 parts complex carbs (veggies) to 1 part starch. Use a whole grain pasta to sneak a few grams of vegetable protein in your diet as well! CHEERS!

Ingredients:
1 pound pasta of choice
2 3/4 pounds fresh cherry tomatoes, assorted colors and flavors, cleaned and rinsed
4 ounces soft mild goat cheese, crumbled
1/2 cup freshly torn basil leaves
2 Tablespoons olive oil
1-2 teaspoons seasoning salt

Cook pasta according to directions in boiling salted water just until done, then drain. Do not rinse.

In a large bowl toss warm pasta with tomatoes, crumbled goat cheese, basil leaves and olive oil and allow warm pasta to melt cheese. Taste for flavor and season with You Have Arrived Finishing Salt as needed. Serve warm or cold.

Try this: Mix 2 parts veggies with 1 part pasta and toss with homemade vinaigrette for a great side dish salad that will keep you on track!

Stop Competing - This WLS is about our Health, not a Contest!

Recently I was reminded of how much effort we invest in competing to lose weight, even with WLS. So I pulled this bulleting from our 5 Day Pouch Test archives and wanted to share it again, even though many of you have seen it. Be sure to download the free poster as well - it is so pretty and a real reminder that weight loss is a personal endeavor, not a competition. I work with this topic every day and I still need a reminder that it is a journey, not a race. Link for the Full Newsletter

Greetings Neighbors!No Contest

Maybe it's the fall sports season that has so many of us in the competitive mood lately. Seems like things have really heated up on the weight loss surgery scrimmage lines where it is more popular than ever to compare and compete with one another in our weight loss. And while some healthy competition can be a great motivator the comparison of weight loss can lead to utter discouragement. I see it even with the 5 Day Pouch Test that people are making comparisons in how much weight is lost in the 5 days and if they do not meet that superficial standard they consider their 5DPT effort a failure.  It is not.

Unless you pound-for-pound and fork-for-fork competitively gained weight with another person you have no business competing to lose weight. Contrary to popular culture, weight loss is not a contest. Weight loss is a life saving initiative owned by the one taking action.

By all means we should compare our experiences. Let's share recipes and exercise tips. Let's give reminders to drink our water and take our supplements. But let's leave the competition to the amateurs. As weight loss surgery patients we understand that our lives were in danger from obesity and we took medical action to change the course. We are much wiser for it. Few people who join their positive energy forces in a united effort for better health ever feel burdened by not living up to an artificial contest.

If you are feeling beaten by the competition I invite you to download and print the copyrighted poster above. You can get it here. Please let it serve as a reminder the grand purpose of this weight loss surgery experience. You deserve to be healthy and pursue many prizes that far exceed the dot-marks on a weight loss ticker.

Remember, we are all in this together and we are here for you.  Please be sure to take a look at some of the free download worksheets LivingAfterWLS has available for you. Weekly Digest: Tips & Hints for WLS Success

Success Secrets Shared
Strategies for lasting weight loss & weight maintenance

July 17,  2012
LivingAfterWLS, LLC - All Rights Reserved
Greetings!

I hope you this message finds you well as we reach the mid-point of summer. Recently I was asked to share my best diet and weight loss tips. I think like any of us in pursuit of better health and life-long weight management we can never satisfy an appetite for healthy tips and sound advice. Long before WLS I was collecting tips, and occasionally including them in dietary and health management.  It seems to me that the best tips are tried-and-true wisdom recycled over and over, while poor advise simply fades away to forgotten. So in this week's digest I've gathered some of tips and wisdom that works for me and for many of my LivingAfterWLS Neighbors as well. I hope you find a new gem to treasure and spot an old favorite among the lot. Drop by the LivingAfterWLS Neighborhood and share your wisdom for better health and weight management. After all, we are all in this together!
Best Wishes & Good Health!

Greetings Neighbors and Happy Summer 2012!

Summer is upon us with record breaking heat and strange weather events across the country. And many of you, after enjoying the July 4th Holiday, are getting back on track using the 5 Day Pouch Test. This makes it a good time to review the basics of the 5 Day Pouch Test and answer some of the questions we are asked by people, just like you, who want to do their best with weight loss surgery using the 5DPT as one of their tools. As we recover from obesity many of us report enjoying the activities of summer as one of the great thrills that come with weight loss. I hope you have found this to be true for you.
One way to get the most enjoyment out of the summer season, and any season, is to take a few moments to review the basics that keep us on track with weight loss surgery. Nothing will bring the good times to a halt faster than feeling discouraged or disappointed with our surgery and our health. If we take a few moments to review the basics and make a few adjustments we can stay on track while enjoying the good life we dreamed of before surgery. And now is also a great time for a reset if we find ourselves so far off track that we need the 5 Day Pouch Test . Wherever you may find yourself at this moment I hope this Bulletin has something to offer as LivingAfterWLS continues to support your best efforts with weight loss surgery.

Summer Heat Poses Danger to WLS Patients

Summer Heat & WLS What you must know to survive record-breaking temps!

From the LivingAfterWLS Weekly Digest July 2, 2012
It's hot out there! Across the nation, as we look forward to celebrating Independence Day on Wednesday, many are suffering from record-breaking hot temperatures. Add to that power outages that have shut-down air conditioning and refrigeration and this is one sweaty country. Aside from being uncomfortable and inconvenient, high temperatures pose serious health threats including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

Those of us with weight loss surgery may be at increased risk of heat related illness if we struggle with the all-important Rule #2 of the Four Rules: Drink Lots of Water. As bariatric patients we are instructed to sip-sip-sip water during waking hours to keep our body hydrated and facilitate weight loss. In situations of extreme heat even a slight case of dehydration can become serious and may include symptoms very similar to dumping syndrome such as dizziness and disorientation.

Please take a moment to review the articles in this week's Digest and take appropriate action to protect your body from heat related illness with proper hydration and other temperature-lowering actions. And be mindful of those around you for symptoms that suggest a heat related illness, sometimes we do not recognize the symptoms in ourselves. Let's take care and avoid being one of the statistics during this week of celebrating in scorching high heat. You deserve to take extra-steps to be healthy and enjoy your new life of LivingAfterWLS!

Seasonal Melons: Perfect in the WLS Diet

Hello Everyone! I'm so happy to be back on the grid after a short break. How is everyone doing? This is my favorite time of year in the battle against the Carb Monster because I do better with my Day 6 & Protein First plan than in any other season. Last night for dinner we grilled steaks and had a side salad of cubed cantaloupe, sliced strawberries, fresh raspberries & blueberries. No dressing. 100% fruit goodness. Following the 2B/1B (2 Bites Protein, 1 Bite Carbohydrate) I had a flavorful meal that kept me satisfied for hours. Delicious! Try it for yourself, simple fresh fruit & berries with your grilled protein: Pure Protein First Love!

Many weight loss surgery patients report melon to be one of the easiest of fruits to enjoy after surgery. Melons are generally low in natural sugar, ripe on flavor and easily digestible. They are rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Potassium, Vitamin B6, folate and dietary fiber.

How to Select and Store
The key to purchasing a quality melon is to find one that is ripe. If you tap the melon with the palm of your hand and hear a hollow sound, the melon has passed is ripe. Choose a melon that seems heavy for its size, and one that does not have bruises or overly soft spots.

Melons & Food Borne Illness
Because of heightened sensitivity to foods and food borne illness gastric bypass patients must exercise extreme food safety precautions. Follow these simple guidelines to help keep your fruit fresh as well as safe.

When you buy cut melons, be sure they have been buried in ice or displayed in a refrigerated case, not just displayed on top of ice. Uncut melon does not need to be refrigerated.

Before cutting, the outer surface of the melon should be washed with drinking water to remove surface dirt.

Hands and all equipment and utensils (cutting boards, knives, etc.) need to be washed thoroughly with hot soapy water, and rinsed.

Cut melons must be refrigerated at 41º F or below.

Cut melons may be served without refrigeration for a maximum of 4 hours (such as at a brunch, picnic, or buffet). At the end of that time, any leftover melon must be thrown away.

A Few Quick Serving Ideas:
Add some sparkling water to fresh squeezed cantaloupe juice for a delightfully refreshing drink in the warm months of the year.

In a blender or food processor, purée cantaloupe and peeled soft peaches to make delicious cold soup. Add lemon juice and sweetener (sparingly) to taste.

Top cantaloupe slices with yogurt, and chopped mint.

JELL-O and Yogurt -- Great Idea!!

This is a cool snack tip I just came across in Diabetic Living (Spring 2012): "To satisfy my sweet tooth I mix a little sugar-free gelatin powder into plain nonfat Greek yogurt. It adds flavor and sweetness." from Pan Bentley, page 22. I like this idea because it changes-up the sometimes tedious yogurt, and it is another opportunity to get gelatin in our diet which we know supports healthy hair & nails!! Plus -- can you say YUMMY!!! Give it a try and let me know what you think. And for more gelatin ideas take a look at this past issue of Cooking w/Kaye in our archives:
http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs008/1101189349792/archive/1104218782240.html#

Recipes: JELL-O JIGGLERS
There's no better way to eat JELL-O. JIGGLERS are available in tons of shapes and in every JELL-O flavor out there. It's everyone's favorite for a reason.

2-1/2 cups boiling water (Do not add cold water.)
2 packages (8-serving size each) JELL-O Brand Gelatin, any flavor

Kaye's Note: In place of the 2 packages (8-serving size each) JELL-O Brand Gelatin I use 1 package (4-serving size) sugar free JELL-O and 2 envelopes Knox Original Gelatin Unflavored. I then proceed with the recipe as directed.

1. Stir boiling water into dry gelatin mix in large bowl at least 3 minutes until completely dissolved. Pour into 13x9-inch pan.
 2. Refrigerate at least 3 hours or until firm.
 3. Dip bottom of pan in warm water 15 seconds. Cut into 24 decorative shapes using 2-inch cookie cutters, being careful to cut all the way through gelatin to bottom of pan. Lift JIGGLERS® from pan.

Reserve scraps for snacking. Store in tightly covered container in refrigerator. Kaye's Note: I enjoy tossing the scraps with yogurt and topping with granola or nuts for a refreshing and energy-boosting morning snack.
