The LivingAfterWLS Neighborhood is currently offline for maintenance and technical work in addition to security upgrades. Due to some personal emergencies in late March and April I have been unable to fully participate in the upgrades and security discussions. It is important to me to be involved in this process so I can fully understand what we offer the membership of our Neighborhood. Please accept my apology for this unexpected delay.

Our rescheduled Grand Re-Opening is now slated for May 1, 2013!

Tip 'o the Month #2 - Synching the Neighborhood with your Facebook account:
It is very popular these days to synchronize social media accounts and the Neighborhood now makes it possible to connect your Neighborhood account with other social media including Facebook and Twitter. You are in control of these settings. Many people prefer to keep their Neighborhood identity separate from other social media due to the sensitive nature of WLS and the deeper conversations we enjoy here. On the other hand, many are willing to share-all, tell-all with their circle of friends beyond the Neighborhood. The settings options lets you share your content at your comfort level. Here's what to do:

Neighborhood Refurbishing Scheduled Dec. 27-30

The LivingAfterWLS Neighborhood will be off-line beginning December 27 through December 30 while we refurbish our community in anticipation of exciting new changes coming in 2012. Beginning in 2012 you will enjoy enhanced features in our safe haven community including:

• Member created Social Groups
• Member created awards & titles celebrating one another
• Increased privacy and security protecting your rights as a community member
• Downloads manager to organize your WLS articles and recipes with integrated sharing options
• Faster navigation and load times
• User-managed social network integration (Link your Neighborhood account to Facebook, Twitter and others with settings you control.)

The following Neighborhood features will be retired:

• Seldom used forums including: the Alumni Forums, The Global Neighborhood Forums will be retired. In addition, forums that generate excessively long threads will be retired including the Accountability forum. In addition we will retire the ambassador titles, Fun Friday, Neighborhood Swaps, Weekend Wanderings and all threads exceeding 80 posts each. The new Social Groups and Awards system will replace and improve the community in a membership-driven inclusive manner; in other words the membership will build the content in a manner that is useful and meaningful to them. Fewer forums will keep the conversation focused on the weight loss surgery experience and empowering one another to do our best in the pursuit of healthy weight management.

Neighborhood News: Friday June 10

Happy Fun Friday to you All!

Thank you so much for your support & patience during the unscheduled outage of the LivingAfterWLS Neighborhood beginning June 5 and resolved on June 8. This was only the second serious unscheduled outage in the 5 year history of the Neighborhood but stressful to myself and the Tech Team nonetheless. I am genuinely grateful to you, My Neighbors, for your patience and understanding. It is with joyful sincerity that I invite you to drop back to the Neighborhood which has always been and continues to be your Safe Have Circle of Friends and the best online destination for weight loss surgery support.

Great Things Coming Soon!!
We have some exciting changes scheduled in the next few weeks so please keep an eye out for these improvements to your community. I am really excited about the coming addition of a Download Database where we may work together to build an article resource and recipe collection. This will be a free feature to all registered members. Our Premier members (paid subscribers) will enjoy an exciting new feature called "Member Marketplace" where you will be able to promote and sale goods via the Neighborhood. This feature, The Neighborhood Bazaar will be a great place to pass along clothes to your WLS Neighbors as we downsize our bodies on the way to better health. In addition members will have an option to offer electronic products (think eBooks) and hand crafted items all subject to our Appropriate Content Policy (to be posted at the time of roll-out; basically a boiler plate policy of reasonable use specifying no adult content). And finally - for all members who choose to take advantage we will have more social connection options. Currently we allow Twitter and Facebook log-in using your information from those accounts and Social Network Sharing of posts - see the social buttons at the bottom of each post page. Additional Social Network features including "LIKE" and "Google +1" sharing are forthcoming.

Your Privacy is Our Business
But speaking of social networking let me take a moment to discuss you and your privacy in the LivingAfterWLS Neighborhood. The LivingAfterWLS Neighborhood offers the highest level of privacy protection possible in an online community: See Guidelines. We do not share your contact data (ie; email data) or release our lists to advertisers. For me the subject of weight loss surgery has been very personal and privacy, particularly during weight loss, has been deeply important to me. I know it is to you as well. Only this week we learned that one popular social network now uses facial recognition for pictures shared on their website. This function is automatic unless the member opts-out by making a purposeful and complicated adjustment to their rofile. If a user does not change their preferences then any picture posted is scanned and tagged with facial recognition software. In contrast our Premier (paid subscribers) Members in the Neighborhood may post pictures knowing that only registered members of the site will see the pictures: not search engines and not lurkers. In addition, it is very easy to mark a photo private and share with your select group of Neighbors rather than the entire World Wide Web. We do not make random changes to our Privacy Policy and we value you as a multi-dimensional person. We want you to feel comfortable with what you share here and how that sharing is used: You Are In Control. Like the Gallery, Premier members enjoy the same privacy options on their blogs. You set the level of sharing. By the way - our subscriptions prices are low and simply support operation of the Neighborhood so we do not have to intrude on your space with constant advertising that you see on all other sites. The best place to learn about your options and settings is to click the down-arrow to the right of your Display Name in the upper right corner of the screen: Neighborhood Home Page. From there you can select the option link and review your settings making adjustments as you desire.

My how time does fly! This month (March 10th to be exact) marks the 4th Anniversary of the LivingAfterWLS Neighborhood! Many of our Neighborhoods had not yet "Arrived" back in 2006 when the Neighborhood was born! And here we are today celebrating together in the common quest for health, wellness, friendship, knowledge and stewardship all sharing the common connection of weight loss surgery. The Neighborhood is billed a "Safe Haven Circle of Friends" and from behind the scenes we actively work to protect our community from invasion by hackers, spammers and those with malicious intent to harm or destroy our borders. More importantly, from the front side of the Neighborhood our steadfast citizens protect one another in a self-ordained Neighborhood Watch where Neighbor protects Neighbor and compassion is served-up kindly and regularly. It is often expressed that there is no other place like The Neighborhood on the Internet. And that, my dear friends, is because of the Neighbors, each and every one of you. I am so humbled an honored that many of you have made this your destination and your home in your weight loss surgery journey. When we first opened the community gates to the Neighborhood in 2006 I was skeptical at best and told my advisers I would try it for a year but doubted it would take hold. Now, four years later, I cannot imagine my weight loss surgery experience without the Neighborhood and without each and every one of you. Thank you for being here.

Welcome Home Neighbors!

So glad to have you back after an agonizing week-long outage. The strength of our relationships was truly realized when we were suddenly disconnected and unable to gather here in support and friendship. I appreciate the loyalty of each of you and treasure the kind messages and shows of support, particularly when it became necessary to cause a public stink to get results from our Internet Host.

Please join me in giving Melinda (melsreturn) a big cyber-hug for opening her Recovering Fatty Home to us. She gave us a special room and made us quite comfortable, treating us as her cherished guest. She is a valued member of our community here and a treasured leader in her own community. Have you ever been stuck on the perpetual hold circle never to get results? That's how I've spent most of my time since Tuesday, November 3, 2009.

The entire LivingAfterWLS suite is hosted by Register.com -- a high-priced host & domain register that promises "100% online time because 99% is not enough." We use this web host because, until now, we believed in their lofty promises and security claims:

"our website hosting solutions give you more of what you need to succeed online - including state-of-the-art features, world-class support and guaranteed reliability that other business web hosting providers can't match." -- Register.com

On November 3, 2009 Register.com outsourced technicians crashed the LivingAfterWLS Neighborhood.

These same technicians have failed to restore the Neighborhood; Register.com has failed to react to my calls for site support or restoration.

I have been patient.
I have been understanding.
I have been polite.
I have been apologetic to the LivingAfterWLS Neighbors.

But damnit. Time's Up!

The Neighborhood WAS online and growing since March 2006 and WE have made it our safe haven circle of friends support community. We are authentic: We are family.

And nobody at Register.com is listening to how important this is to us.

Their accounts payable is happy to listen when I call to update an expiration date on payment card. They are happy to take my call when I add a web domain. But six days after crashing our Neighborhood -- and I get "assurance we are watching this" and "you are important to us" after numerous calls. But nothing happens.

Happy Weekend Neighbors

Greetings Neighbors & Happy Weekend!

'Tis another working weekend for me -- hopefully the last working weekend for a spell. You know, September is my absolute favorite month of the year and I have been in the office every single day but two this month. What's up with that? Note to agent: No more September book deadlines! What's wrong with a March deadline? Nobody wants to be outside in Wyoming in March for Mother Nature's sake! I'm not sure if I have told you guys but I have another book coming out on the heels of the Day 6 book so no rest for the girl who can't say "NO!" The book coming out in November is the "Nurturing Neighbors Support Group Leader's Manual" -- I have a feeling a lot of group leaders are going to enjoy this little helper.

Yesterday was fantastic! I was in the city for meetings and had a chance encounter, at the manicurist of all places, with a most delightful woman who is none other than the highly regarded fiction writer Cherie Benett! She and her husband, Jeff Gottesfeld, have collaborated on several books. In addition they have written for the daytime dramas Another World and As the World Turns and Warner Brother's Smallville. She is a lovely and gracious person. You may see her in the Neighborhood soon as she is considering a lap-band procedure in hopes of relieving the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. I assured her our good Neighbors would extend a warm hand of welcome. It was a very special day!

With the cooler weather I have been keeping my personal commitment to walk puppy (Now 18 months old - ha!) Charvie every afternoon/evening. We have been taking long walks around our pond and down through the horse pasture. This is in addition to my early morning treadmill walk. I just want to say what good nature does the soul after a long day at work staring down the face of technology. I feel so blessed that I can and AM making time for this priority. And I think my little (95-pound) dog likes it too!

Probiotics Help Gastric-Bypass Patients Lose Weight More Quickly
"In a study published in the July issue of the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, John Morton, MD, associate professor of surgery at the medical school, showed that patients who take probiotics after the gastric-bypass procedure tend to shed more pounds than those who don't take the supplements. Probiotics are the so-called "good" bacteria found in yogurt as well as in over-the-counter dietary supplements that help in the digestion of food."
