Protein Shakes:
Reader Input Urgently Need

Dear Readers:

Help! We have a lot of "newbies" out there asking for suggestions on protien shakes. When I had my surgery in 1999 my bariatric center discouraged the use of protein shakes - I've never tried one. I know the thinking has changed and many bariatric centers now recommend a protein shake as a meal replacement or snack. Can those of you who use them answer a few questions for our newbies:

Favorite brand/flavor?
Where do you purchase? Cost?
How often do you substitute a shake for a meal?
Any other information you have?

Please post your comments to this thread, it's easy and you can remain anonymous if you like.

Thanks a bunch!
Kaye

Check out www.bariatriceating.com. This isn't a commercial or endorsement, just a helpful tip.

Nectar brand protein drinks are high in protein, genuinely taste good, and are a think consistency - which is really important right after surgery!

Also try Matrix brand chocolate or vanilla - yummy, lots of protein.

My favorite right now is IDS brand belgian chocolate. It's got a ton of protein (23g per 8 oz) and it does not have artificial sugar! It's sweetened by fructose, fruit sugar. It's also yummy and has a lot of vitamis.

The GNC Strawberry Pro Complex mixed with light 8 continent soy milk 4 big ice cubes and half a banana is the best way to have a mock protein smoothie. If you need to add fresh strawberries and blueberris if can tolerate fruit.

Also I purchese sugar free syrups like they have in coffee shops. I used the chocolate from GNC and add sugar free hazelnut and de caf coffee along with a banana on occasion. You can really be creative with these syrups you can find them on line or at coffee houses NOT Starbucks. I also found a not to bad tasting 20gram pudding at GNC it's not cheap 7.99 for 4 but well worth it for those chocolate cravings.

My all time favorite is "Any Whey" flavorless protein powder. You can bake with it, put it in yoghurt or anything. I love a shake made with:
bannana
strawberries
1/2 cup skim milk
1 or 2 scoops of Any Whey
4 ice cubes
splenda
vanilla extract

Available at GNC and online
